Swift Response to a Medical Emergency in Germany

In September, the Remed Assistance service center received an urgent case from Kaufbeuren, a small town approximately 100 kilometers from Munich.

Remed Assistance Coordination

The insured suffered a serious injury to the left leg after slipping on a rainy day and required immediate medical attention. Due to the critical nature of the diagnosis, which included a right ankle fracture-dislocation with a Type B lateral malleolus fracture, rupture of the anterior syndesmosis ligament, and a fracture of the medial malleolus, emergency surgery was necessary.

Because of the urgency, the hospital requested a €3,000 deposit before the surgery from the estimated total amount of €10,000.

During the operation:

  • Open reduction (alignment of the fractured bones),
  • Fixation of the lateral malleolus with a 7-hole IFZ plate, tubular screw, and fixation screw,
  • Repositioning and osteosynthesis of the medial malleolus with a spongious screw and metal support,
  • A Kirschner wire was also applied for additional stability.

Although the hospital was not part of Remed Assistance’s partner network, the team immediately contacted the hospital and insurance company upon receiving the case. Financial guarantee was arranged to cover the total treatment cost of approximately €7,000.

Thanks to close follow-up and efficient coordination, the €3,000 deposit initially paid by the insured was fully refunded.

Treatment Outcome

The patient received timely and comprehensive medical care, ensuring a successful recovery. All costs were covered by the insurance company, and the deposit was fully reimbursed through Remed Assistance’s careful oversight.

Throughout the process, the insured expressed sincere gratitude to the team for their professionalism and continuous communication.

Financial processes conducted with clinics outside our partner network are routine operations successfully managed by Remed Assistance. In this case, the process was completed flawlessly and thoroughly, safeguarding the interests of all parties involved.

In September, Remed Assistance’s service center received an urgent call from a medical facility in Kaufbeuren, a small town located about 100 kilometers from Munich.
The insured had slipped and fallen on a rainy day, sustaining a serious injury to the left leg that required immediate medical attention.

The diagnosis revealed:

  • A right ankle fracture-dislocation with a Type B lateral malleolus fracture,
  • A rupture of the anterior syndesmosis ligament,
  • And an additional fracture of the medial malleolus.

Given the severity of the injury, the patient was taken into surgery without delay. During the operation, open reduction of the fractured bones was performed. The lateral malleolus was fixed using an IFZ plate and screws, while the medial malleolus was stabilized with a spongious screw and metal support. A Kirschner wire was also applied to ensure structural stability.

Remed Assistance Coordination

Since the clinic was not part of Remed Assistance’s partner network, a deposit of €3,000 was required before admission.
Once the case was reported, our Network team immediately contacted the hospital and coordinated with the insurance company to provide the necessary financial guarantee for the treatment costs, which totalled approximately €7,000. Thanks to close follow-up and timely coordination, the €3,000 deposit previously paid by the insured was fully refunded.

Treatment Outcome

The patient received prompt and comprehensive medical care, enabling a smooth recovery process. All treatment costs were covered by the insurance company, and the initial deposit was reimbursed in full through Remed Assistance’s diligent oversight. Throughout the process, the insured expressed deep gratitude for the team’s professionalism and continuous communication.

Managing financial processes in a non-network medical facility presented valuable operational experience. In this case, Remed Assistance once again demonstrated its ability to ensure patient safety and financial transparency through effective coordination and communication across different healthcare systems and administrative structures.
