Successful Medical Repatriation After a Severe Spinal Injury

A complex spinal injury sustained abroad required rapid coordination, medical expertise, and persistence to overcome logistical barriers — all culminating in a successful repatriation managed by Remed Assistance.

A swimming accident leads to a serious cervical injury

In late October, a 36-year-old tourist from Ufa sustained a serious cervical spine injury while swimming in a hotel pool in Alanya. The impact left him temporarily paralysed. Thanks to the hotel staff’s swift and careful response, he was safely taken out of the water and transported to the nearest hospital.

Immediate coordination and medical approval

Soon after, his wife contacted Remed Assistance. Recognising the critical nature of the situation, the operator immediately involved the team leader and company doctor. Following the medical recommendation, and taking into account the policy limit and insurer’s approval, a deposit was urgently confirmed for an MRI and subsequent emergency surgery.

Timely surgery ensures fast recovery

The quick and decisive medical intervention proved crucial — the patient’s recovery progressed rapidly, and within a few days, doctors authorised a stretcher repatriation under the supervision of a medical escort.

Challenges with flight logistics

Despite receiving medical clearance for travel, arranging the repatriation presented new challenges. Stretcher transport required scheduled flights, but suitable routes were limited. The lack of direct flights to the patient’s hometown — most operated as charters — added further complications. As a result, the airline twice declined carriage for operational reasons. After several days of active coordination and negotiations, Remed Assistance managed to secure an appropriate route and organise all necessary transfers.

Constant support throughout the process

Throughout the entire process, the team leader and operators stayed in close contact with the patient’s wife, offering both logistical and emotional support. They guided her through hospital procedures, transfer formalities, and the repatriation process, ensuring she was informed and reassured at every step.

According to Remed Assistance Team Leader Murat Islam, “Despite the challenges and delays, the coordination was successfully completed, and the patient was safely admitted to his local hospital. The most rewarding part for the team was receiving a heartfelt message of gratitude and positive news about his recovery.”

This case once again highlighted the importance of rapid medical assessment, transparent communication, and perseverance in coordination. Even when faced with external logistical challenges, the teamwork and professionalism demonstrated by the Remed Assistance team ensured that the patient’s recovery and repatriation proceeded safely and efficiently — proving that human care remains at the heart of every successful operation.
