Road Traffic Accident in Türkiye: Coordinating a Complex Medical Repatriation
While travelling to a restaurant in a pre-arranged transfer vehicle, the insured patient was involved in a road traffic accident after an oncoming vehicle crossed into the opposite lane. The vehicle overturned following the collision.
The patient sustained multiple fractures to the pelvis and sacrum and was unable to walk due to severe pain. She was hospitalised and required intensive medical monitoring.
Repatriation by air
Once her condition had stabilised, the decision was made to return her to her home country for further treatment.
A standard commercial flight was not suitable. The patient required air travel on a stretcher with medical escort.
There was an additional consideration: her adult son, who has a disability, was travelling with her and depended on her support. His safe transportation therefore also had to be incorporated into the repatriation plan.
Coordinating every step before departure
The operation required a stretcher module, medical escort and accommodation for the accompanying medical professional ahead of the flight.
The patient and her son were then transferred to the airport by a specialised ambulance team. Following arrival in the home country, a medical team was requested to facilitate the patient's onward hospital admission.
Complex medical repatriations such as this form part of the daily operational work of Remed Assistance. The team coordinated the full chain of care — from assessing the feasibility of air transport and arranging the stretcher configuration to medical escort, ground transfers and handover for onward hospitalisation, while also taking the needs of the accompanying family member into account.
