Intracranial Aneurysm in Türkiye: Coordinating Care When Every Decision Matters
While travelling in Türkiye, an insured patient suffered a ruptured intracranial aneurysm resulting in a major subarachnoid haemorrhage and a critical neurological condition.
Emergency neurosurgery was performed, including aneurysm clipping and removal of an intracerebral haematoma. Following surgery, the patient remained in intensive care, requiring mechanical ventilation and continuous monitoring.
When treatment falls outside standard coverage
The medical emergency was compounded by a complex insurance issue. The surgery and several related services fell within policy exclusions, while the cost of treatment was substantial.
The case therefore required ongoing discussions between the treating hospital and the insurer, including negotiations around treatment costs, the scope of potential coverage and the most appropriate way forward for the patient and her family.
An exceptional coverage decision
Following these discussions, the insurer agreed to cover the case as an exception, within the policy limit.
Despite the extensive medical intervention, the patient's condition subsequently deteriorated. Brain death was confirmed following the required assessments.
After consultation with the medical team and the family, consent was given for organ donation. Once the necessary procedures had been completed, repatriation of the deceased to her home country was arranged.
Cases of this complexity are part of the day-to-day work of Remed Assistance. The assistance team coordinated the medical, insurance and logistical processes throughout the case — from communication with the treating facility and insurer to coverage negotiations, family liaison and the arrangements required following the patient's death, including repatriation.
